Query: State field in contacts

The RightNow help documentation on State field of contacts table says as below:

The State field classifies how the contact was added (whether through Oracle RightNow CX Cloud Service (Service) when working on an incident, Oracle RightNow Outreach Cloud Service (Outreach) when adding contacts, or Oracle RightNow Opportunity Tracking Cloud Service (Opportunity Tracking) when working on an opportunity) and what areas of Oracle RightNow CX it may have acted upon since. The State field may be updated automatically, and you can also update it manually

My Q is

From the console, I created an oppty and added a new contact to it (clicking on new button) i.e. am using Oracle RightNow Opportunity Tracking Cloud Service.However, the state field shows all the 3 states ie service,outreach and opportunities when ideally it should show me only opportunities.Correct?

Can anyone provide a good explanation on this plus how does the state field gets updated automatically?This is also not clear from online help content
